In March 2012 Arts NT, which provides Ausdance NT’s operational funding, announced to the organisation its intention to “employ an outside consultant to examine the dance sector’s needs and determine the best model for dance support relevant to the NT.” This review is expected to take place between July and September 2012 and will be a joint initiative of Arts NT and Ausdance NT, with Arts NT as the lead agency. This is the first time such a review has taken place in the Territory.

We welcome the opportunities for the dance sector and the organisation that will be opened up by this proposed review. The limited funding and operational resources that have been historically available to Ausdance NT have meant that the organisation has struggled for many years to meet the needs of this huge, diverse and vibrant sector that stretches across the whole of the Territory. It is essential that the review recognises the need for stronger and better targeted support for NT dance through an adequately resourced service organisation.

The review will be the major activity that underlies our program for 2012. Ensuring that an understanding of the dance sector, its activities, goals and needs inform the review; assisting the appointed consultant to make contact with the sector; and communicating about the review to the sector will be key responsibilities.

In preparation and in support of the upcoming review, Ausdance NT have begun collecting information on the sector already. Gathering information via our networks, communications and through surveys at the recent MoveMeNT Dance Expo in March and at the Ausdance NT Dance Stage for Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival in May.

At the same time, and in conjunction with the work we do around the review, Ausdance NT will be committed to providing ongoing support and service for the sector in a number of key areas. So stay tuned to keep informed regarding some up coming and important ‘information sharing forums’ being planned specifically in preparation for the review and looking towards Professional Development opportunities for the NT dance sector.

The Dance Stage at this years Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival will be honoured with an Opening and Welcome speech from our Lord Mayor, Katrina Fong Lim this year.

The Dance Sector is celebrating the end of AUSTRALIAN DANCE WEEK and will be showcasing the talent and diversity that abounds in Darwin.

A huge 34 dance groups will be filling out a 6 hour event down on the beautiful Nightcliff Foreshore at the old Seabreeze Hotel historical site. This event has occurred annually for 6 years and this year has needed to double in length due to the huge participation and enthusiasm our Darwin community has for DANCE.

This year also marks special significance as the Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival have invited Darwin’s own emerging professional company Gary Lang NT Dance Company to perform adapted excerpts of his latest choreography in a 20 minute Guest Artist spot.

Alfresco dining will be available at the Dance Stage for the first time with Gourmet Sushi and Delicious Lebanese treats from Su Su to abound, alongside the wine bar and of course with the ever favourite Jays Coffee and Ice Cream trailer nearby at the Jetty, we will be settling in for a night delights not only for the eyes, but for the taste buds too.

So bring a blanket or chair and come along to enjoy the entertainment and atmosphere at this years Dance Stage.

SEE YOU THERE!!

The Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival is a wonderful ‘Community Festival’, unique in the world as it is a ‘linear’ arrangement of stages, spread along the Nightcliff foreshore, specifically designed to incorporate our beautiful and unique environment by the sea and to highlight local acts and performers!

Ausdance NT is thrilled to be able to partner with the Festival again this year to program and manage their Dance Stage and to provide a performance platform to showcase our brilliant and diverse Dance Sector to the wider public, both locals and visitors.

We look forward to receiving your Expressions of Interest.
