In post-war Darwin during the forties and fifties, a rich and culturally diverse music and dance scene emerged out of The Sunshine Club – a monthly dance hall housed in the ex-army camp – now Stuart Park.
The mixed-race community of Indigenous, Filipino, Torres Strait Islander, Polynesian, and Greek backgrounds broke down many of the racial barriers of the time and an unmistakable musical style surfaced.
Join Ali Mills and members of the Top End Folk Club on the closing night of the festival for a glorious celebration, reminiscent of the days of old Darwin.
Learn the famous Shake Hands Dance with Ali Mills before Club Sunshine on August 29, at Dancing in The Sands in Festival Park.
